UK Status

Resident. Widely distributed and generally common throughout the British Isles.

Montgomeryshire Status

A fairly common species throughout the county. Although care should be taken as there are a few other very similar species, especially E cirsiana.

Wingspan :   M & F, 12-23mm.

Confusion species

The female can be confused with E. cnicicolana.
Flight time & Voltinity (Univoltine)

Habitat

Open woodland and wet grassy places.

Foodplant

Marsh thistle and common knapweed.

Lifestage data

Stem/root feeder. Eggs laid on foodplant. Larva lives and feeds within stems and roots, moving to upper part of the stem before pupating. Pupates in a silken cocoon in stem.
