Resident. A common species found throughout much of England and Wales. Less well distributed and more local in Scotland.

Montgomeryshire Status

First recorded in 2012 at Middletown in the east of the county. 

Wingspan :   M & F 14-16mm.

Confusion species

M. epilobiella.
Flight time & Voltinity (Univoltine)

Habitat

Damp places.

Foodplant

Great willowherb.

Lifestage data

Stem miner. Eggs laid on foodplant. Larva mines under the bark, overwinters in the root, in spring mining the lower portion of the stem and the lower leaves. Pupates in the leaf mine in a whitish silken cocoon near the mid-rib.
