Wingspan :  M & F, 36-45mm.

Confusion species

Ingrailed Clay, Barred Chestnut, Rosy Marsh Moth and Square-spotted Clay.

Habitat

Broadleaf woodland and wooded heathland.

Foodplant

Many herbaceous plants and some woody species such as bramble, bilberry, heathers and sallow.

Lifestage data

Overwinters as a small larva near the soil. Larva August-May, feeding at night. Pupates underground.
