A fairly common species, especially in the eastern half of the county.

Wingspan :  M & F, 42-48mm.

Confusion species

Clouded Magpie.


Flight time (Montgomeryshire)

Habitat

Mainly in heather moorland, but also found in woodlands gardens and allotments.

Foodplant

Blackthorn, hazel, blackcurrant, spindle and many other trees and shrubs.

Lifestage data

Overwinters on foodplant as small larva. Larva late August-mid June. Pupates in a cocoon on the plant.
