Common and widespread on the western side of the county, almost absent from the eastern half.

Wingspan :  M & F, 55-85mm.

Habitat

Open birch woodland and lightly wooded moorland.

Foodplant

Heather, bramble, hawthorn, blackthorn, sallow & meadowsweet.

Lifestage data

Eggs are laid in batches. Larva late May-August, larvae feed gregariously at first, then singly. Overwinters as a pupa in a tough papery cocoon.
